What is dark shyshark?

The dark shyshark, also known as the grey carpetshark, is a species of shark belonging to the family Scyliorhinidae. They are native to the eastern coast of South Africa, living in shallow and rocky waters from depths of 30 to 200 meters.

The dark shyshark is a relatively small shark, reaching a maximum length of around 75 cm. They are typically gray or brown in color, with scattered dark spots on their body. This species is known for its ability to flatten itself against the substrate, making it difficult to spot.

Dark shysharks are nocturnal and feed mainly on small fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. They are also known to feed on other small sharks and skates.

Despite being relatively common in their range, the dark shyshark is currently considered near threatened due to overfishing and habitat destruction. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species and its habitat.
